Speculation surrounding the future of Swindon Town’s highly-rated teenager Botan Ameen has intensified, with reports suggesting the forward has asked to leave the club after declining a new contract offer.
Swindon are believed to have received a six-figure bid from Norwich City for the 18-year-old striker, who has caught the eye of several Premier League and Championship scouts this season. However, the Robins do not feel Norwich’s offer comes close to matching their valuation of the player.
Town manager Ian Holloway has moved to clarify the club’s position, making it clear that Ameen will not be sold unless the interested parties are prepared to meet Swindon’s price. Speaking on the matter, Holloway stated:
“Botan will remain our player unless a club is prepared to pay what he is worth and meets the value that we believe he is worth. Any club wanting Botan knows what he is worth – so pay the monies or he stays a Swindon player for this season.”
Swindon have offered Ameen improved terms, strengthening their hand should a transfer tribunal become necessary further down the line. This move ensures that, in the event of an eventual departure, the club’s position is protected and they stand a better chance of receiving a fair fee.
Ameen has featured 17 times in all competitions for Holloway’s side this season, netting his first professional league goal during the resounding 4-0 triumph over Grimsby Town in April – a moment that highlighted his potential.
Despite regular first-team opportunities, the former QPR youth product has remained coy about his long-term future at the County Ground. In a candid interview last month, Ameen revealed his uncertainty when questioned about committing to a new deal:
“Honestly, not yet,” he said. “With my agent and everyone who is representing me, there has been some back and forth with the club talking about the contract.
“I genuinely don’t know what is going to happen with my future. Obviously, it would be a pleasure to sign on [with Swindon], but there are technicalities here and there. We don’t know what the future holds, but it is definitely an exciting time for my future. Whatever decision I am going to make will be the right one. I am never going to rush a decision or make a decision if I don’t know whether it will be a good one.”
The situation promises to be one to watch in the coming weeks, with Swindon determined to stand firm on their valuation and ensure the best possible outcome for both the club and their talented young forward.
