Wiltshire Police staff gear up for London Marathon challenge

There’s a mix of nerves and anticipation among staff at Wiltshire Police as several colleagues prepare to take on this weekend’s London Marathon.

Among them is Scott McPherson, Head of Corporate Communications and Engagement, who will be running alongside his brother Luke in support of the Down’s Syndrome Association.

The cause is a personal one. Scott’s nephew, Sonny, was born with Down’s Syndrome last year, and the family has since received support from the charity.

“The advice, support and kindness they’ve shown has been incredible,” he said. “It’s made a real difference to my brother and his partner as they’ve navigated the journey so far.”

Through his role, Scott has also seen the charity’s impact more widely, particularly via its WorkFit programme, which helps people with Down’s Syndrome into employment.

“We’re really looking forward to Sunday,” he added. “It’s a mix of nerves and excitement, but running for such a great cause — and with that atmosphere — will get us through.”

Also lining up at the start is Tom Allen, a Detective Sergeant in the force’s Intelligence Department.

While no stranger to long-distance running, he admits this one feels a little different. “I’ve done marathons before, but this is my first London Marathon,” he said. “There’s definitely a mix of excitement and ‘what on earth am I doing?’”

For him, the focus is simple: enjoy the experience. “I’m running for fun — if you can call it that.”

With thousands set to take part, the London Marathon is known as much for its atmosphere as its physical challenge. For Wiltshire Police staff and officers, it’s also a chance to support causes close to home while testing themselves over the 26.2-mile course.

Win, lose or simply make it to the finish line, Sunday promises to be a memorable day.
