Lessons looked a little different at Lawn Manor Academy this week, as pupils swapped their usual timetable for a day focused on personal development.
Students from Years 7 to 11 took part in a range of activities on 22 April, designed to broaden their experiences beyond the classroom and offer a more rounded approach to learning.
Among the visitors were representatives from Wiltshire Police, South Western Ambulance Service and the NHS, who delivered sessions as part of the Blunt Truth initiative. The talks addressed the real-world impact of knife crime and drug use, giving pupils a direct and practical perspective.
There was also time for something a little lighter. Live music came courtesy of The Mercians, who performed to a lively audience before taking questions about life in the industry.
Elsewhere on site, activities ranged from Forest School sessions — where pupils worked together to solve clues hidden around the grounds — to workshops led by MADE Training, focusing on motivation, revision techniques and exam preparation.
The day was organised by teacher Will Smith, who said the aim was to give students a break from routine while still building valuable skills.
“PD Days are an important part of the school year,” he said. “They give pupils the chance to try something different, hear from inspirational speakers and learn outside the usual curriculum.”
He added that the success of the event relied heavily on the involvement of external guests. “We’re very grateful to everyone who came in — without their support, days like this wouldn’t be possible.”
For pupils, the change of pace offered something not always found in a standard school day — a mix of practical advice, creativity and a chance to see learning from a different angle.
