Face coverings to be mandatory on public transport

Grant Shapps, transport secretary, has advised that wearing face coverings will be compulsory on public transport in England from 15th June.

In the daily briefing at Downing Street yesterday Mr Shapps said: “As of Monday, June 15th, face coverings will become mandatory on public transport.

“That doesn’t mean surgical masks which we must use for clinical settings, it means the kind of face coverings you can easily make at home.

“As we come through this phase we’re doing what many other countries have asked tranpsort users to do and as passenger numbers increase we need to ensure every precaution is taken on buses, trains aircraft and on ferries.

“With more people using transport the evidence suggest that wearing face masks offers some, all be it limited, protection against the spread of the virus.”

It is understood that young children, disabled people and people with breathing difficulties will be exempt from the new rules.
