Teachers to be considered as a possible priority for Covid vaccine

Teachers could be upgraded to a higher priority for the coronavirus vaccine, when the next phase of the rollout is discussed next week.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), is due to meet on Thursday and committee members are expected to confirm the priority order of who should be vaccinated next.

Professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol and JCVI committee member, Adam Finn confirmed on Sky earlier today that the “critical role” teachers play “really will figure in the discussions.”

This news comes as teachers union NASUWT said too many children were returning to school despite the national lockdown, resulting in a high risk of the virus being transmitted.

It said that prioritising vaccination of teachers and school staff would help to avoid “further disruption to education.”
