Free Half-Term Fun as Festival of Tomorrow Brings Swindon Imaginarium Back to The Brunel

Families looking for something to keep the children entertained this October half-term can enjoy six days of free science experiments, creative workshops and Halloween activities as the Swindon Imaginarium returns to The Brunel Shopping Centre.

Presented by the Festival of Tomorrow, the popular event will run from Monday 26 to Saturday 31 October 2026, with a different theme and activities planned for each day.

Taking place downstairs in The Brunel, opposite Boots, the Imaginarium will be open daily from 10am until 4pm, with no booking required for the general activities.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Children will have the chance to get involved in everything from making volcanoes and experimenting with disappearing ink to exploring the human brain and creating spooky Halloween potions.

Best of all, the activities are completely free, offering families an affordable way to enjoy the school holidays.

Six Days of Free Activities for Swindon Families

The Festival of Tomorrow has put together a programme that combines science, engineering, arts and crafts, with something different to discover each day.

The activities are designed to encourage children to experiment, ask questions and get creative, with plenty of opportunities for parents and carers to join in.

Monday 26 October – Fire

The week begins with a look at the science of fire and heat.

Children will be able to explore the hidden world of infrared technology, discover how thermal imaging can help firefighters and create their own secret messages using disappearing ink.

There will also be fire-themed science demonstrations to enjoy throughout the day.

Tuesday 27 October – Earth

Tuesday’s activities will focus on the world beneath our feet, with volcano art, quicksand experiments and engineering challenges.

Young visitors will be invited to design towers capable of withstanding earthquakes, putting their building skills to the test.

The Wyvern Theatre will also be joining the fun with Jack and the Beanstalk-inspired crafts, including cow masks, beanstalks and giant castles.

Wednesday 28 October – Water

Wednesday will see children explore the properties of water through a selection of colourful experiments.

Activities will include mixing oil and water, discovering how to create a tornado inside a bottle and making fish-themed headwear to take home.

Thursday 29 October – Inside Your Mind

Things take a slightly different turn on Thursday as the Imaginarium explores the human brain.

Researchers from Oxford University will be joining the event, helping children discover how their minds work through a range of hands-on activities.

Youngsters will be able to make brain hats, create artwork inspired by brainwaves and investigate optical illusions that can trick the eyes.

Friday 30 October – Air

Friday’s programme will focus on air and how it can be used to power different creations.

Children will be able to experiment with air-powered machines, make spinning balloon mobiles and create bird decorations to take home.

There will also be a selection of air-themed experiments to explore.

Saturday 31 October – Halloween Spooktacular

The week will finish with a special Halloween celebration.

Children can get into the spooky spirit by making their own magic wands, experimenting with colour-changing potions and creating floating ghosts.

The Halloween-themed activities will provide a free option for families looking for something different to enjoy on 31 October.

Bringing Science and Creativity into Swindon Town Centre

The Swindon Imaginarium is presented by the Festival of Tomorrow, which works to bring science, technology and creative learning to audiences across Swindon and beyond.

By setting up inside The Brunel Shopping Centre, the event makes it easy for families to drop in while visiting the town centre.

There is no need to commit to a full day, with visitors welcome to take part in the activities that interest them during the daily opening hours.

The programme also brings together contributions from local and national organisations, including the Wyvern Theatre and researchers from Oxford University.

Free Activities Made Possible Through Local Funding

The return of the Imaginarium has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Sustainable Futures Programme.

The programme is funded by the Community Benefit Fund established through the Science Museum Group’s Wroughton Solar Park and managed by Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation.

The funding means the activities can be offered free of charge, helping families enjoy an educational day out without worrying about admission costs.

With household budgets still under pressure, free events like the Imaginarium provide a welcome opportunity for children to try new experiences during the school holidays.
