Families in Swindon will be able to visit Father Christmas without paying a penny this year, as The Brunel Shopping Centre announces a programme of free and affordable festive activities in the run-up to Christmas.
With the cost of Christmas continuing to put pressure on household budgets, the shopping centre is making Santa’s Grotto completely free for 2026.
Father Christmas will be welcoming children and their families from Saturday 14th November through to Christmas Eve, appearing every weekend and on selected weekdays throughout the festive period.
The grotto will be located downstairs in The Brunel, giving families the chance to enjoy one of the traditional highlights of Christmas without the usual admission charge.
Although visits are free, families are strongly encouraged to book in advance to secure their preferred date and time.
A Free Visit to Father Christmas
For many families, taking the children to meet Santa is one of the most memorable parts of the festive season. However, with some Christmas attractions costing a considerable amount, the expense can quickly add up, particularly for households with more than one child.
The Brunel hopes that removing the admission charge will allow more families to enjoy the experience.
Children will have the opportunity to meet Father Christmas in the shopping centre’s grotto, with visits available across several weeks leading up to 24th December.
The centre has advised that advance booking is recommended to help manage visitor numbers and ensure families have an enjoyable experience.
Those wishing to reserve a visit can do so through the official Santa’s Grotto booking website.
Festive Makers’ Markets Return to Swindon
Alongside the free grotto, The Brunel will be bringing a Christmas twist to its regular Makers’ Market.
Two festive markets are planned for Saturday 28th November and Saturday 12th December, giving shoppers the opportunity to browse gifts, handmade products and seasonal treats.
The markets will feature traders offering an alternative to some of the usual high street Christmas shopping options.
For those looking for something a little different to put under the tree, the events will provide an opportunity to discover products from independent makers and traders.
The markets also form part of The Brunel’s plans to encourage more sustainable shopping choices during the festive season.
With Christmas shopping often involving large amounts of packaging and mass-produced gifts, locally made and independently sourced products can offer an alternative for those hoping to shop more thoughtfully.
Local Choirs Invited to Perform for Charity
The Brunel is also looking for local choirs and singing groups to help bring some Christmas atmosphere to the shopping centre.
Groups from across Swindon are being invited to perform carols and festive favourites for visitors during the Christmas period.
In return, The Brunel will make a charitable donation for each group that takes part.
The initiative aims to bring local performers into the heart of the town centre while raising money for good causes.
It could also provide an opportunity for school choirs, community singing groups and other local performers to showcase their talents in front of Christmas shoppers.
Groups interested in taking part can contact the shopping centre by emailing info@thebrunel.co.uk.
Making Christmas More Affordable for Swindon Families
The Brunel says its Christmas plans have been put together with affordability, community involvement and sustainability in mind.
A spokesperson for The Brunel said: “We are thrilled to launch such an inclusive, community-focused Christmas programme this year. By making Santa’s Grotto completely free and our regular Makers’ Market with a festive twist, alongside local choirs and singing groups, we hope to ease financial pressures for families while championing sustainability and supporting the incredible work of local charities.”
The decision to offer free visits to Father Christmas will be particularly welcome for families trying to manage the additional costs that come with the festive season.
With the grotto, Christmas markets and performances from local singing groups all taking place in the town centre, The Brunel is hoping to give residents more reasons to visit during November and December.
