Speed checks carried out throughout Swindon and surrounding villages

Officers in Swindon conducted speed checks throughout the town yesterday.

It marked the start of the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) national speed enforcement campaign, and officers from North and South Swindon Community Policing Team 2 attended various locations to show their support.

The locations checked were:

– Thamesdown Drive
– Great Western Way
– Gipsy Lane
– Tadpole Lane
– Wharf Road, Wroughton
– New Road, Chiseldon
– Pack Hill, Wanborough

In total, 25 people were stopped for driving a vehicle at excess speed. Of those 25, four drivers were issued with tickets and reported for the offence of driving at excess speed, while one person was issued with a ticket for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT and the remaining drivers were all given words of advice.

In addition to this, 10 drivers were breathalysed at the roadside – none of these were found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Acting Sgt James Rodrigues and Acting Sgt Mason Johnson led the operation.

A/Sgt Rodrigues said: “During this operation, a number of drivers were stopped for the offence of excess speed. All were provided with words of advice yet some were issued with tickets for the offence as their speeding was severe.

“In one case a member of the public was found to be travelling at 51 mph in a 30 mph zone. Today is the first day of the NPCC national speed enforcement campaign and this should serve as a reminder to those who choose to drive their cars in this manner that it will not be tolerated and is incredibly dangerous to not only yourself, but other road users and pedestrians.”
