Should Swindon introduce double red lines to stop obstructions?

Double red lined routes are commonplace throughout London and are popping up in more and more towns across the country so should Swindon Borough Council introduce a ‘red route’ – a very strict version of double yellow lines.

Fines tend to be more hefty than that for parking on a double yellow and can be issued for more than £100 even if you only stop for a second or two.

Red routes were first introduced in 1991 on some of London’s busiest roads in an attempt to prevent traffic jams from forming and to minimise congestion resulting from parked cars causing an obstruction.

PARKING ON RED ROUTES

Unlike double yellow lines, there are virtually no exceptions to red route parking on double red lines. No stopping, waiting, loading or picking up or setting down of passengers is permitted on red route double red lines.

Licensed taxis are permitted to drop off and pick up passengers on red route double red lines and disabled blue badge holders are permitted to pick up and set down disabled passengers on red route double red lines.

If you could help the council decide what roads need the double red lines which ones would you pick?

  1. It would be nice if someone told us what red lines meant; I have seen these in London and assumed they had ran out of yellow paint.
