Decision on Former Highworth Golf Course Delayed as Council Reviews Options

A decision on the future of the former Highworth golf course has been delayed while Swindon Borough Council considers alternative options for the site.

A report due to be discussed by the Council’s Cabinet on 1 July has been withdrawn and will now be presented at a later date.

The site has been the subject of considerable local debate since councillors previously agreed to investigate a housing-led development on part of the former golf course. Earlier proposals suggested the land could accommodate up to 700 homes, including affordable housing.

However, following May’s local elections and the formation of a new administration, councillors say they want more time to examine how the site could contribute to wider council priorities before any decisions are made.

The council has confirmed that a revised report on the future use of the land will come before Cabinet in due course.

Councillor Matty Courtliff, Cabinet Member for Housing and Property, said the pause would allow for greater engagement with residents and local organisations.

“We recognise the importance of the former Highworth golf course to the local community and this administration is committed to listening to our residents,” he said.

“We will take the time to consider the options for the site, including how it aligns with the administration’s priorities for green spaces.”

The future of the site has attracted significant public interest, with campaigners arguing that the former golf course should remain as open green space. The Save Highworth Golf Course campaign group has been among those calling for greater public involvement in determining its future.

Councillor Courtliff said the council intends to work closely with local stakeholders before bringing forward any new proposals.

“We are committed to meaningfully engaging with local residents, Highworth Town Council and local groups, including the Save Highworth Golf Course campaign group, to help inform future proposals,” he said.

“This approach will help ensure that any future plans for the site are taken forward with input from those who live in and care about Highworth.”

While no new timetable has yet been announced, the delay means discussions over one of the town’s most closely watched development sites will continue for the foreseeable future.

For now, the future of the former golf course remains undecided as councillors weigh housing needs against the desire to protect and enhance green spaces for the community.
