Calne-Based Mobility Aids Firm Earns ‘Great Place to Work’ Recognition

A Wiltshire company whose products are used by wheelchair users around the world has been recognised for something closer to home – the experience of its own workforce.

Urathon, the mobility aids designer and manufacturer based in Calne, has been officially certified as a Great Place to Work for the first time.

The internationally recognised accreditation is awarded on the basis of employee feedback, measuring staff experience, workplace culture and confidence in leadership.

For the 30-year-old business, which employs 18 people and operates from its Wiltshire headquarters while also managing a manufacturing base in China, the award marks a significant milestone.

Managing Director Lucy Carson said the recognition reflected the commitment and character of the people behind the company.

“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved the Great Place To Work certification,” she said.

“This recognition is a direct reflection of our incredible team’s dedication, passion, and the supportive culture we have built together.

“Creating an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated is at the heart of everything we do, and we couldn’t be prouder of this fantastic milestone.”

Founded by Hugh Sims-Hilditch, Urathon is best known for developing flat-free tyres that have become widely used on wheelchairs across the globe. The company has since expanded its role within the mobility aids and medical devices sector, designing and manufacturing products while also sourcing and adapting equipment for the UK healthcare market.

Its products are supplied through mobility retailers and community equipment providers, helping support people with a range of mobility needs.

The Great Place to Work programme is recognised internationally as a benchmark for workplace culture and employee satisfaction.

Sarah Lewis-Kulin, Vice President of Global Recognition at Great Place To Work, said achieving certification required a sustained focus on employee experience.

“Great Place To Work Certification is a highly coveted achievement that requires consistent and intentional dedication to the overall employee experience,” she said.

“By successfully earning this recognition, it is evident that Urathon stands out as one of the top companies to work for, providing a great workplace environment for its employees.”

The award also reflects the stability of the company’s workforce, with many employees having spent years, and in some cases decades, with the business.

As competition for skilled staff continues across the manufacturing and healthcare sectors, the certification provides independent recognition of a company culture that employees themselves have helped shape.

For a business built on improving quality of life for others, the latest accolade suggests Urathon is placing equal value on the wellbeing of the people behind its success.
