Approval of the Astrazeneca vaccine could help ease Covid restrictions, minister confirms

The Oxford AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine is expected to be given the go ahead this week with some reports suggesting the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) could make an announcement as early as today.

Data for the vaccine was passed to regulators just before Christmas who have been checking to ensure it meets their strict standards of quality and effectiveness and is safe to use.

Cabinet minister Michael Gove has indicated this morning in an interview with Sky News that approval of a Covid-19 vaccine, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, could accelerate the lifting of the current Covid-19 restrictions.

“If we do get the authorization for that vaccine, and the rollout goes according to plan, then we will be able to progressively lift some of the restrictions, which have made life so difficult for so many,” he said.
