Swindon voters take to the polls

A steady stream of people have been heading to the polling stations today to cast their vote in the 2018 local elections.

Local elections generally see a lower turnout than national ones – in 2016, only a third of those eligible nationally cast a vote.

Swindon has been in the hands of the Conservatives all the way back to 2004 but many Labour supporters believe this is their year.

Liam Contessa, 36, after casting his vote said he always made sure to take time out and read up on the local candidates and what they stand for.

He said: “It’s really important, I know it’s not the general election so it may not seem like a big change but it’s about your local community and how it will be looked after.

“I vote for the individual and not the party when it comes to local politics – it’s important to research the individual councillors and what they’ll do for your community.”

Polls close at 10pm tonight and we’ll have live coverage throughout the rest of the day.

Our coverage will continue into the evening where we will have results direct from the counts until Friday morning – and, whatever happens, we’ll have all the reaction.
