For more than fifty years, a pharmaceutical manufacturer on Kingfisher Drive in Dorcan has quietly played a crucial role in healthcare, yet many locals might not realise the life-saving work happening just beyond their view.
Thermo Fisher Scientific, which began as Roussel Laboratories before becoming part of Patheon, has been a steady presence in Swindon since 1970. Following Patheon’s acquisition in 2017, Thermo Fisher emerged as one of the largest life sciences companies in the UK, with a global workforce of 120,000.
Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, recently visited the site to see firsthand the cutting-edge manufacturing facilities and to hear about exciting plans for growth. The facility, employing nearly 400 people, manufactures a variety of sterile liquid and freeze-dried products, including flu vaccines used across the UK.
Since 2020, Thermo Fisher has invested $200 million to expand vaccine and pharmaceutical drug production for a range of serious illnesses. This significant investment has transformed the 300,000 square foot site into a state-of-the-art commercial manufacturing hub.
During the visit, Cllr Robbins learned that Thermo Fisher intends to further grow the site over the next five years, with plans to create up to 100 new jobs in Swindon. The visit was part of a wider tour across the Borough aimed at celebrating the innovation and success of local businesses.
Commenting on the visit, Cllr Robbins said: “It was a privilege to tour the Thermo Fisher facility and see the remarkable work involved in producing products that keep people safe and healthy every day. Their plans to expand and add one hundred jobs show real confidence in Swindon and our workforce.
“We are fortunate to have a strong mix of employers in Swindon, both large and small, who are vital to keeping our economy thriving. I look forward to celebrating their ongoing contributions.”
Colin Drummond, General Manager at Thermo Fisher Swindon, added: “We are proud to continue investing in both the site and our workforce here in Swindon. The visit from Cllr Robbins was an excellent opportunity to discuss future collaboration with the Council as we grow together.”
