Swindon finance firm seals strategic deal ahead of housing market rebound

A Swindon-based corporate finance firm has helped secure the future of a long-standing building materials business, in a deal shaped by cautious optimism around the UK housing market.

Watersheds has advised on the sale of European Slate Company Limited (ESCO) to Euston Ventures Ltd—a move designed to position the company for growth when housebuilding begins to pick up pace again.

The timing is no accident.

With the Government targeting the delivery of 1.5 million new homes over the next five years, alongside ongoing planning reforms, confidence is slowly returning to parts of the construction sector. For businesses linked to that supply chain, the expectation is clear: demand will follow.

ESCO, an established importer and distributor of natural roofing slate, has built its reputation supplying builders’ merchants across the South of England and the Midlands. Its materials are sourced from quarries in Spain, Brazil, Wales and Malaysia—giving it both scale and resilience in a competitive market.

Watersheds identified Euston Ventures as a suitable buyer, pointing to its track record of investing in companies offering high-quality products and dependable service. The firm already owns a complementary business, European Plastics, which manufactures rubber roofing components—opening the door to shared expertise and potential growth.

For Watersheds partner John Stopher, the deal was about more than numbers.

“A business sale can often be life-changing,” he said. “It’s about understanding what the owner wants, guiding them through the process, and making sure the outcome is right at the right time.”

That mattered to ESCO owner Mike Farelly, who built the company alongside a long-standing team.

“It was important to me that the business was placed in safe hands,” he said. “Watersheds made the process straightforward… they explained everything clearly and were there throughout.”

Professional advice on the deal was also provided by Thrings and Cazenove Capital.

While the housing market remains uncertain in the short term, deals like this suggest confidence is quietly building behind the scenes.

For firms willing to plan ahead, the recovery—whenever it comes—is already being factored in.
