Young performers from Prime Youth Theatre are preparing to take to the stage at Swindon’s MECA in January 2027 with a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
The production will run from Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 January, with performances beginning at 7pm each evening.
Adapted by MM Forbes Eldridge, the hour-long show promises a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s famous tale, bringing magic, mischief and adventure to the heart of Swindon.
Tickets are now on sale for the three-night run, which will give local audiences the chance to see some of the town’s young theatrical talent in action.
Shakespeare’s Magical Island Comes to Swindon
The Tempest tells the story of Prospero, a former Duke of Milan who has been forced into exile on a remote island with his daughter, Miranda.
With the help of magic, Prospero conjures a storm that brings those responsible for his downfall to the island, setting in motion a story of revenge, betrayal, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Along the way, audiences meet a collection of memorable characters, including the mischievous spirit Ariel and the island’s inhabitant Caliban.
For this new production, Prime Youth Theatre will bring the story to life through an energetic and playful approach to performance.
The adaptation condenses Shakespeare’s original work into approximately one hour, making it an accessible introduction for those experiencing the play for the first time.
A Chance to See Swindon’s Young Performers
The production will be performed by members of Prime Youth Theatre, giving young people the opportunity to tackle one of Shakespeare’s best-known works.
Rather than presenting the play as a traditional period drama, the company is promising an imaginative theatrical experience that makes use of the story’s magical setting and larger-than-life characters.
The production will explore the themes of power, forgiveness and hope, while retaining the adventure and humour that have helped The Tempest remain popular with audiences for centuries.
With its combination of supernatural characters, dramatic confrontations and moments of comedy, the play offers plenty of opportunities for the young cast to demonstrate their abilities.
Making Shakespeare Accessible to All Ages
Shakespeare can sometimes feel daunting, particularly for younger audiences or those unfamiliar with his work.
However, Prime Youth Theatre’s adaptation aims to make the story enjoyable and accessible, without losing the themes that make the original play so memorable.
At around an hour long, the production offers families and theatre enthusiasts the opportunity to experience Shakespeare in a shorter format.
The company hopes audiences of different ages will come along to enjoy the performance, whether they are already familiar with The Tempest or discovering the story for the first time.
Three Performances at Swindon’s MECA
The production will take place at MECA, one of Swindon town centre’s established entertainment venues.
With three evening performances scheduled, there will be several opportunities for local residents to support the young cast.
The show also provides another opportunity to see the work being produced by Prime Theatre, which continues to create theatrical experiences involving young people in Swindon.
For those looking ahead to the new year, The Tempest offers an evening of live theatre without needing to travel outside the town.
