St Gregorios Church lends a hand to Swindon families through Salvation Army Food Ban

Faith and community came together in Gorse Hill this week as St Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church delivered a collection of food items to the Salvation Army Food Bank. The donation, collected during the church’s observance of Great Lent, aims to support local families facing financial pressure.

Great Lent, a period of reflection and charitable acts in the Orthodox Christian calendar, inspired parishioners to contribute non-perishable goods over recent weeks. Vicar Rev Fr Varghese T Mathew, alongside Binu Chandapillai and Alvin Johnson, personally handed over the items to Captain Theresa Torr, who thanked the church for its generosity.

A parish spokesperson said: “Great Lent reminds us to look beyond ourselves and extend kindness to those in need. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the Salvation Army’s work and hope this small contribution helps families who are going through difficult times.”

The Salvation Army Food Bank continues to provide vital support to households across Swindon, particularly as demand for assistance remains high. Initiatives like this highlight the role local organisations and faith communities play in meeting those needs.

St Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church, worshipping at Tanwood School in Delta Business Park, is part of the Malankara Orthodox Church UK, Europe and Africa Diocese. Beyond its liturgical life and Sunday School programme, the parish maintains an active charitable focus and plans to expand its worship schedule to four Sundays a month in the near future.
