Service supports pre-Christmas ‘don’t drink and drive’ campaign

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) is supporting the pre-Christmas ‘don’t drink and drive’ campaign, in partnership with Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police.

The road safety teams will be out and about in three town centres in the coming weeks, meeting with local people and encouraging them to plan their festive journeys.

Using a crashed car display to highlight the risks of thoughtless or dangerous driving, the teams will be urging people to use designated drivers or taxis to stay safe on the roads during the Christmas period.

Your Holiday Starts Now

The roadshow will be at the following locations:

  • Saturday 7 December, Royal Wootton Bassett High Street, 11am to 3pm
  • Wednesday 11 December, Marlborough High Street, 10am to 2pm
  • Friday 13 December, Warminster Market Place (outside library), 10am to 2pm

The local fire crew and a DWFRS Safe & Well Advisor will also attend the event in Royal Wootton Bassett, to promote home fire safety and on-call firefighter recruitment.

Turning Point, a charity that helps people with drug and alcohol issues, will have representatives at all three events.

Christine Sharma, road safety manager for DWFRS, said: “With Christmas parties looming, we know people will be out and about a lot more, so we really want them to plan their journey and not put themselves at risk. It’s not just about drinking and driving in the same evening, it’s about being aware that you can still be over the limit well into the following day.”

She added: “It’s not possible to say how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit, as everyone is different. Your weight, gender, age and metabolism all play a part, as do stress levels, what you’ve eaten recently, and even the type of alcohol you’re consuming. The only way to be sure you don’t go over the limit is to have none for the road.”
