A new multi-million-pound support scheme has opened to help Swindon residents facing financial pressure, with a focus not just on crisis response but long-term stability.
Swindon Borough Council has been allocated £8.3m by the Government to deliver its new Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF), which will run until March 2029.
The fund replaces the previous Household Support Fund and aims to go a step further — offering both immediate help for those in difficulty and measures designed to prevent households from reaching that point in the first place.
Applications are now open, with eligible residents able to apply for one-off crisis payments if they are experiencing sudden financial hardship or are at risk of doing so. Alongside this, applicants may be referred to additional services aimed at improving financial resilience.
The council says the funding will also be used more broadly across the community, including support for housing costs, emergency food provision and grants for local organisations providing advice and practical help.
Kirston Nelson, Corporate Director for Prevention and Communities, said the scheme is designed to offer both short-term relief and longer-term support.
“The Crisis and Resilience Fund will help families build financial resilience while also delivering support to those already in crisis,” she said. “We would encourage anyone who needs help to come forward as early as possible.”
Residents are also being signposted to independent advice through Citizens Advice Swindon, which can provide guidance on managing finances and accessing available support.
The launch comes amid continued pressure on household budgets, with councils increasingly tasked with bridging gaps between national support and local need.
For those eligible, the message is clear: help is available — but applying sooner rather than later may make all the difference.
