Police investigate suspected arson at Swindon’s Mechanics’ Institute

A fire at one of Swindon’s most recognisable — and long-neglected — buildings is being treated as suspected arson, with police now appealing for witnesses.

Emergency services were called to Mechanics’ Institute in Emlyn Square at around 6.20am on Friday morning, following reports of a blaze inside the derelict structure.

Fire crews moved quickly to bring the situation under control, with surrounding roads temporarily closed while the building was made safe. Despite the scale of the response, no injuries have been reported, and a thorough search confirmed no one was inside at the time.

Wiltshire Police say they are treating the incident as suspicious. Officers believe a number of युवts were seen in the area in the hours leading up to the fire, and enquiries are now focused on establishing exactly what happened.

The timeframe under scrutiny stretches from 7pm on Thursday evening through to 7am on Friday morning. Anyone who was in the area — particularly drivers with dash cam footage — is being urged to come forward.

The Mechanics’ Institute itself remains a prominent but troubled landmark in the town centre. Once a focal point of Swindon’s railway heritage, it has stood empty for years, its future the subject of repeated debate and stalled plans.

For now, attention turns to the investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them via 101, quoting the relevant crime reference, or to pass details anonymously through Crimestoppers.

It’s an all-too-familiar pattern with vacant historic buildings — visible, vulnerable, and too often caught up in incidents like this.
