North Swindon Kids Set to Walk, Run, Hop, Skip and Jump at New Junior parkrun

Sunday mornings in North Swindon are about to become a little more energetic, with the launch of a new junior parkrun aimed at encouraging children to get outdoors and active.

The Moredon Sporting Hub junior parkrun officially began today, offering a free weekly 2km event for children aged between four and 14.

Held every Sunday at 9am, the event is designed to be inclusive and pressure-free, giving children the chance to run, jog, walk—or simply skip around the course at their own pace.

Organisers say the emphasis is firmly on enjoyment, confidence and community rather than competition.

Co-Event Director Aurélie Soulier said the team behind the initiative hopes it will become a welcoming space for local families.

“Our goal is to create an environment where children can enjoy being active outdoors without pressure,” she said. “It’s not about being the fastest. It’s about taking part, building confidence and having fun.”

The event begins before the starting whistle, with families encouraged to travel on foot or by bicycle where possible. Children are asked to arrive early for a briefing and warm-up session designed to get everyone moving before the run begins.

The launch has been supported by Wiltshire & Swindon Sport and the Moredon Sporting Hub, part of Central Swindon North Parish Council, while the event itself relies entirely on volunteers from the local community.

Claire Gallagher, Co-Event Director and a parkrun ambassador, said the addition of a third junior parkrun in Swindon reflects growing enthusiasm for community-based activity.

“We’re excited to see this event grow and thrive,” she said. “We’d love to hear from schools, sports clubs and families who want to get involved—whether that’s taking part, volunteering or simply coming along to support.”

The new event also strengthens links with Swindon’s wider parkrun network, helping create a pathway for younger participants to continue into 5km events as they grow older.

Phil Jefferies, Event Director at Seven Fields parkrun, said the initiative was a positive step for the town.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to develop healthy habits early on and become part of the wider parkrun community,” he said.

Participation is free, although children must register online beforehand to receive a barcode, allowing them to record their progress and work towards milestone wristbands.

Organisers are also appealing for more volunteers, with roles ranging from marshalling the route to timing and cheering participants on from the sidelines.

For North Swindon families looking for a simple way to start the day with fresh air, exercise and community spirit, the new junior parkrun may prove just the ticket.
