New Defibrillator and Bleed Kit Installed in West Wichel to Boost Community Safety

Residents in West Wichel now have access to a new publicly available defibrillator and emergency bleed kit following a joint community initiative aimed at improving emergency response provision in the area.

The lifesaving equipment has been installed near the new Estates Office, north of Orchards Rise, providing the first dedicated emergency response point within West Wichel itself.

While several defibrillators are already located at facilities in Middle Wichel, including local schools and the Hall & Woodhouse district centre, there had previously been no equivalent provision within the western part of the expanding development.

The new installation has been funded through a partnership between the Wichelstowe Joint Venture and Wroughton & Wichelstowe Parish Council, with additional support from London Hearts, a charity that works to make defibrillators more affordable and accessible in communities across the country.

The announcement coincides with British Heart Week, which highlights the importance of rapid access to defibrillators and emergency equipment in improving survival rates during cardiac arrests and other serious medical emergencies.

Defibrillators are designed to be used by members of the public and provide clear spoken instructions to guide users through the process of helping someone in cardiac arrest before emergency services arrive.

Dan Pavely, Project Director for Wichelstowe, said accessibility had been a key consideration when choosing both the equipment and its location.

He said: “We wanted to make sure this lifesaving equipment is accessible to everyone, which is why no previous first aid training or qualifications are needed to use the defibrillator.

“The device provides clear step-by-step instructions, so people will have the confidence to act quickly in an emergency without fear of causing harm.

“Installing the defibrillator and bleed kit reflects our commitment to improving community safety and resilience as Wichelstowe continues to grow.”

Parish councillors have also welcomed the installation, describing it as an important addition to emergency provision in the area.

John Hewer said: “This is great news for the Wichelstowe community. The Parish Council is committed to ensure that lifesaving defibrillators are available all across the parish and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to part fund this unit.

“It really could make all the difference in an emergency.”

Wichelstowe is one of Swindon’s largest ongoing housing developments and is being delivered through a partnership involving Barratt Homes, David Wilson Redrow and Swindon Borough Council.

The long-term project will create around 3,000 new homes alongside schools, community facilities, open spaces and recreational areas over the coming years.

As the development continues to expand, community leaders say ensuring residents have access to essential facilities and services remains a priority.

The addition of the defibrillator and bleed kit provides reassurance that residents, visitors and those enjoying West Wichel’s parks, trails and public spaces have quicker access to equipment that could prove vital in a life-threatening emergency.
