Lawn Manor Academy Hosts International Lessons on Education

A Swindon secondary school is helping strengthen educational links between Britain and Germany after taking part in a prestigious international partnership programme.

Lawn Manor Academy recently welcomed German headteacher Jeannette Thurner as part of the UK-German Connection initiative, which aims to build stronger relationships between schools and young people in both countries.

During her three-week visit, Ms Thurner, who leads a primary school near Chemnitz in eastern Germany, spent time shadowing staff and observing lessons across a range of subjects.

Working closely with Sarah Smith, Head of Design and Technology at Lawn Manor Academy, she explored how practical learning and classroom organisation are approached within the British education system.

Speaking about her visit, Ms Thurner described the experience as both inspiring and informative.

“I have been impressed by how well organised the school is and by the positive atmosphere throughout,” she said. “The pupils have been welcoming and engaged, and I have enjoyed observing a wide range of subjects.”

She added that particular aspects of the school’s approach—including behaviour management, inclusion and classroom structure—had provided valuable ideas she hopes to take back to Germany.

Among the initiatives she is now considering are introducing cookery lessons, beginning English language teaching at an earlier age and reviewing support for refugee pupils learning German.

“This visit has given me many positive ideas for future development,” she said. “I am very grateful to Lawn Manor Academy and Sarah for making me feel so welcome throughout my stay.”

Lawn Manor Academy headteacher Russell Langdown said the programme had been equally beneficial for the Swindon school and its pupils.

“We are proud to be part of the UK-German Connection programme,” he said. “It has given our pupils the opportunity to learn more about school life in Germany while also providing valuable professional development opportunities for staff.”

He added that the experience reflected the academy’s commitment to building an outward-looking and inclusive school community.

The UK-German Connection programme continues to support partnerships between schools, teachers and youth organisations in both countries, encouraging cultural exchange and the sharing of ideas around education and community life.

Lawn Manor Academy is part of the Ascend Learning Trust.
