Swindon Panto Favourite David Ashley Returns for Jack and the Beanstalk

Pantomime favourite David Ashley is set to return to the Wyvern Theatre this Christmas as Jack and the Beanstalk arrives in Swindon for a festive run packed with songs, slapstick and larger-than-life laughs.

The experienced performer will take on the role of Dame Trott in the new production, which opens on 5 December 2026 and runs through to 3 January.

For many local theatre-goers, Ashley’s return will feel like something of a homecoming. The actor and director first appeared at the Wyvern back in 1986 in—appropriately enough—Jack and the Beanstalk, alongside television presenter Johnny Ball.

Now, four decades into a career spanning West End productions, national tours and countless pantomimes, he says stepping back onto the Swindon stage holds special significance.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be back at the Wyvern, celebrating my 40th professional anniversary,” he said. “This theatre is where it all started for me, and it really does feel like coming home.”

Produced by Imagine Theatre, this year’s pantomime promises all the traditional ingredients audiences have come to expect: colourful costumes, audience participation, comic chaos and a healthy helping of festive silliness.

The story follows young Jack and his family as they struggle to survive under the shadow of a fearsome giant. With the family forced to sell Buttercup the cow, Jack’s decision to trade her for a handful of magic beans soon sends him on an adventure above the clouds.

Organisers say the production will feature dazzling sets, toe-tapping musical numbers and plenty of jokes aimed at children and adults alike.

The Wyvern’s annual pantomime has long been one of the highlights of Swindon’s festive calendar, regularly drawing families from across Wiltshire and beyond.

Further casting announcements are expected in the coming months, though producers are already encouraging audiences to book early.

For many, Christmas in Swindon simply would not feel complete without a trip to the panto—and with David Ashley back in a frock once again, this year’s giant adventure already looks set to be a crowd-pleaser.
