Barnum Brings Big Top Magic to Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre

There are some productions that entertain, and there are others that completely take over a theatre from the moment the curtain rises. The latest show to grace the Wyvern Theatre stage, Barnum, firmly sits in the second category, delivering an evening packed with spectacle, energy and an atmosphere that rarely lets up.

From impressive circus performances to a cast that seemed to fill every inch of the stage, this is one of the biggest productions to arrive at the Wyvern in a very long time — and possibly the largest outside of the annual performances from SYP.

Leading the show is Lee Mead as the legendary P.T. Barnum, and what a performance it was. Mead commanded the stage from start to finish with charisma, warmth and a real showman’s energy that carried the entire production.

The circus elements throughout the production are outstanding and add a genuine sense of spectacle rarely seen in touring theatre productions. The skill level on display was remarkable, helping transform the stage into a true travelling circus atmosphere.

Among the standout performers were Emily Odunsi and Niki Tsonopoulou, both of whom delivered performances that repeatedly drew huge reactions from the audience. Their athleticism, timing and stage presence added another level of excitement to an already energetic production.

What also deserves huge praise is the sheer scale of the cast. Every scene felt full of life, movement and colour, giving the production a real sense of grandeur that perfectly suits the Barnum story.

The audience reaction throughout the evening said everything. Whooping, gasps, spontaneous applause and a standing ovation at the end confirmed that this production has struck exactly the right balance between musical theatre and full-scale spectacle.

For anyone looking for a traditional quiet night at the theatre, Barnum probably is not it. But for those wanting an evening packed with energy, circus thrills and genuinely memorable performances, this is exactly the kind of production regional theatres should be bringing in more often.

Barnum will be playing the Wyvern until Sunday 10th May 2026. Get your tickets here.
