More than 550 primary school children across Swindon will soon be heading home with a brand-new bedtime story under their arm, thanks to a new schools project led by local author Kate Claxton and The Festival of Tomorrow.
Launching its school visits in February, The Bedtime Story Experiment blends storytelling with gentle science ideas, designed to spark curiosity while reminding families why bedtime stories still matter. The project sets out to show children that reading does not have to feel like a task, but can be playful, imaginative and part of winding down at the end of the day.
The workshops are delivered by Kate Claxton and centre around her latest book, The Good Ship Bed. Each session ends with pupils receiving their own free copy of the book, allowing the bedtime routine to continue well beyond the classroom.
The books have been made available through sponsorship from Swindon Travel Hub, supported by additional funding from the National Literacy Trust.
Speaking about the project, Kate Claxton said the aim goes beyond simply handing out books.
“This is about opening up imaginations and helping children see stories as something enjoyable and comforting,” she said. “Sharing books at bedtime can become a really positive part of family life, and being able to do this during Swindon’s Year of Reading makes it even more meaningful.”
Swindon Travel Hub, an independent travel agency based in Old Town, has played a central role in supporting the project. The sponsorship highlights how local businesses can make a tangible difference within the community, particularly when it comes to education and wellbeing.
A spokesperson for Swindon Travel Hub said the partnership felt like a natural fit.
“We are proud to help put books directly into the hands of children across Swindon,” they said.
“The stories being shared are full of adventure and gentle travel themes, which reflects what we love most about helping families explore the world. Encouraging reading at a young age benefits everyone, and we are delighted to support a project that gives something lasting back to the town.”
Further backing from the National Literacy Trust strengthens the project’s reach, supporting its wider goal of improving literacy levels and access to reading resources for children from all backgrounds.
The Bedtime Story Experiment forms part of The Festival of Tomorrow, which returns this February with a packed programme celebrating science, creativity and the arts across Swindon. Schools taking part gain free access to workshops, shows and challenges, with more opportunities available for those yet to get involved.
Schools interested in future Festival of Tomorrow activities are encouraged to register via the festival website.
