Swindon Film Secures Support as It Prepares for 80th Anniversary Celebrations

One of Swindon’s longest-running cultural organisations is preparing to celebrate a major milestone after securing support from a well-known Old Town business.

Swindon Film, which screens award-winning international cinema at the Arts Centre on Devizes Road, has announced specialist jeweller Deacons as a sponsor ahead of its 80th anniversary celebrations.

The volunteer-run organisation will mark eight decades in 2027 and is planning a programme of activity designed to raise awareness of the film society and attract new audiences.

Founded in 1947, Swindon Film is believed to be one of the oldest film societies in the country. The organisation operates on a not-for-profit basis and is run by a team of nine volunteers.

Each season features 14 films shown on Wednesday evenings between September and March, with the programme focusing largely on acclaimed international productions.

Chairman Robert Elrick said considerable effort goes into selecting a balanced programme each year.

“The film committee aims to show a careful balance of films that reflects the drama, tragedy and comedy of life, reflecting what the people of the world have in common, rather than what separates them from one another,” he said.

“We are a not-for-profit organisation, so to have some financial support from another supporter of Old Town activity is really helpful. It should make sure our 80th birthday year goes off with a bang.”

The sponsorship comes from Deacons, the long-established jewellery business which has traded since 1848.

Managing Director Richard Deacon welcomed the opportunity to support another institution with deep roots in the town.

“Deacons was founded in 1848 – a full 99 years before Swindon Film – so they still have some catching up to do,” he joked.

“But we’re delighted to help them celebrate this milestone. They are one of the oldest film societies in the country, yet they keep ahead of trends and show award-winning international films in a delightful venue.

“Long may Swindon Film continue.”

The organisation hopes the anniversary year will help introduce more local residents to its programme of independent and international cinema while celebrating its long contribution to Swindon’s cultural life.
