Swindon’s much-loved Health Hydro is preparing to open its doors once again, with swimmers set to return to the historic pools from Monday, 19 January 2026. After a long spell of careful restoration, the Victorian landmark is almost ready to welcome the public back into a space that now looks brighter, fresher and far better equipped for the years ahead.
The first stage of the refurbishment has been a sizeable undertaking, not least because the building is Grade II* listed. That status brings its own challenges, and early investigations revealed a number of hidden complications that demanded a cautious approach. One of the most significant tasks was the painstaking removal of asbestos, carried out to ensure the site remains safe and suitable for future works.
Visitors returning next month will notice an improved layout from the moment they step inside. A reworked entrance, new changing areas, and refurbished gym and activity spaces all play their part in modernising the building without diluting its historic character. Much of the work has also taken place out of sight, with upgrades to equipment and energy systems expected to reduce long-term running costs and support the Hydro’s continued use by the community.
Funding for this initial phase has come from a blend of sources, including Historic England, Towns Fund support, Section 106 contributions and the Council’s own investment. Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, who oversees placemaking and planning, said she was delighted to see the end result taking shape. She noted the care taken throughout the process, describing the reopening as both a relief and a significant step forward for an important heritage site.
Looking beyond the January return, further improvements are already planned. Permission has been granted for the next stage of works, focusing on the main pool hall. These proposals include updates to ventilation, accessibility and environmental performance, along with more conservation efforts to protect the original fabric of the building. Although funding has not yet been finalised, the Council has said it is actively exploring options.
Elsewhere on the site, progress continues in the Turkish Baths area, where the roof of the Relaxation Room is being restored thanks to additional support from Historic England’s Heritage At Risk Capital Fund.
Barnaby Rich, GLL’s Partnership Manager for Swindon, said the team is eager to welcome customers back. He highlighted upgrades to the gym, communal areas and changing rooms, as well as the significant improvements behind the scenes designed to make the building more efficient and comfortable for visitors.
