With just over three weeks to go until the General Election, Swindon Borough Council are in search of Poll Clerks and Counting Assistants to assist in the running of polling stations and the counting of votes on 12th December 2019.
Anyone can apply for the roles – you do not have to be a civil servant, or have a particular set of qualifications.
What are the jobs?

Poll clerks
Poll clerks are employed to carry out duties at polling stations. They are responsible for making sure that the proper procedures for voting are followed in polling stations.
On Election Day, polling staff are required to work from 6:30am until 10.00pm.
They will work together to oversee the vote on 12 December, explaining the process to the public, and making sure records are kept.
Polling station staff are not allowed to leave the premises during polling hours to make sure the integrity of the voting system is not put at risk.
They are also forbidden to wear any colours associated with a political party, such as blue, red, or yellow, and cannot discuss politics with the public, in case it influences their vote.

Counting Staff
Counting staff are needed from around midnight until the early hours of the morning. This role requires high levels of concentration and accuracy.
On rare occasions, they may also be required to recount the ballots in cases where the result is too close to call.
How much can I earn?
The rates of pay for election staff. A poll clerk fee was previously set at £131.36 and the counting assistant fee was £100.00.
Eligibility
- You must be at least 18 years of age to work in a polling station or as a counting assistant
- If you are not employed by the council you will need to provide your passport or relevant supporting information which confirms you are entitled to work in the UK
- When applying to undertake any of the duties above, political restrictions will apply. This will include working, promoting and undertaking any campaigning for any political party or candidate. You will find more information on this when completing the application form and/or training
