Chippenham Pupils Add Up the Fun for Number Day Fundraiser

There was a cheerful buzz around St Mary’s Catholic Primary School as pupils swapped their usual uniforms for something a little more numerical, marking Number Day 2026 with a blend of creativity, cakes and careful calculation.

The Chippenham school, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, threw itself into the national NSPCC initiative with gusto. From brightly coloured costumes inspired by digits and sums, to a steady stream of visitors at the cake sale table, the day had all the hallmarks of a community effort with a purpose.

Number Day, held annually in support of the NSPCC, encourages schools across the country to celebrate mathematics while raising funds for services that support children and families. At St Mary’s, that meant a programme of activities designed not just to entertain, but to build confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.

Classrooms were alive with problem-solving challenges, collaborative tasks and plenty of discussion, as pupils explored maths in ways that reached beyond the textbook. The aim, staff say, is to nurture independent thinking and resilience—skills that serve well beyond the school gates.

Headteacher Lucy Buckland said the day had struck just the right balance. “It was lovely to see the whole school come together for Number Day. The children really embraced the fun of the day, from their creative outfits to the activities and cake sale, all while supporting such an important cause.”

The event also drew praise from the Trust. Chief Executive Helen Taylor noted the wider impact of days like this, bringing together learning and community spirit in equal measure. “It’s great to see pupils enjoying maths while also raising money for a charity that does such vital work supporting children and families,” she said.

By the end of the day, the tally wasn’t just measured in pounds raised, but in smiles, confidence and a renewed sense that maths—often seen as a challenge—can just as easily be a source of enjoyment.

In Chippenham, at least, it seems the numbers added up rather nicely.
