Swindon will once again come together to recognise the service and sacrifice of military personnel, veterans and their families when Armed Forces Day returns to Lydiard Park later this month.
The annual event will take place on Saturday, 20 June, from 11am until 4.30pm, with organisers promising a packed programme of entertainment, military displays and family-friendly activities.
Held as part of the national Armed Forces Day celebrations, the event honours members of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, alongside reservists, veterans and the families who support them.
Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere throughout the day, with military demonstrations, cadet groups, community organisations and charities all taking part. A range of stalls, craft displays and attractions will also be available, alongside food vendors and a funfair.
Live entertainment is set to include performances from the Gurkhas, local cadet groups and a brass band, adding to what organisers hope will be a memorable day for all ages.
The event has received support from the Ministry of Defence, which recently awarded more than £430,000 to community groups and local authorities across the country. Swindon received £5,000 towards staging this year’s celebrations.
Councillor Gary Sumner, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said the day provides an important opportunity for the community to recognise those who have served.
“Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for our whole community to come together and show our gratitude to those who serve and have served.
“Swindon stands shoulder to shoulder with our veterans, and everyone connected with the armed forces, and we are proud to host this event at Lydiard Park once again. I look forward to welcoming residents, families and visitors for a day of celebration and reflection.”
Councillor Leanne Stevenson, the council’s Armed Forces Champion and a military veteran herself, highlighted the significance of the occasion.
“As a veteran, I know first-hand the commitment, resilience and camaraderie that define our Armed Forces community,” she said.
“Armed Forces Day is a chance not only to say thank you, but to bring people together to recognise the sacrifices made by service personnel and their families. I encourage residents to come along to our fantastic event and show their support by honouring those who have served.”
Admission is free, with complimentary parking available throughout the day.
Local charities, community organisations and businesses interested in hosting a stall or performing at the event are invited to contact the organisers via armedforces@swindon.gov.uk.
