It is understood that the driver, of what is reported as a silver saloon-style car, has initially stopped and spoken to the family of the child before getting back in his vehicle and driven off without passing on any details.

The driver is described as a white man, approximately 6 feet tall and was wearing a shirt and grey trousers.

PC Emilia Cutler said: “I would urge the driver involved in this incident, who will know who they are, to get in contact with us immediately.

“It is fortunate the boy only suffered minor injuries and our enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or doorbell footage from this area is asked to contact us on 101 and quote crime reference number 54210037737.

“We’d also like to hear from anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time of the incident with dashcam footage of the incident or the manner of driving of the silver car.”
