One of children’s literature’s most popular characters is preparing to take flight once again, as Zog arrives in Swindon this summer.
The much-loved story by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler will be brought to life at the Wyvern Theatre on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July, as part of a major UK and Ireland tour.
First staged in 2020, the production has quickly established itself as a firm family favourite, blending live music, colourful puppetry and energetic storytelling. The show features songs by Joe Stilgoe and has been adapted for the stage by Freckle Productions, known for bringing a number of Donaldson and Scheffler’s stories to theatre audiences.
At its heart is the tale of Zog, an enthusiastic but accident-prone young dragon at Madam Dragon’s school. Despite his best efforts, things don’t always go to plan—until a kind-hearted girl steps in to help. Together, they face his biggest challenge yet in a bid to earn that all-important golden star.
The touring production features a cast led by Samuel John Taylor in the title role, alongside Jess Lobo as Pearl and Lotti Brogan as Madam Dragon. A supporting ensemble brings multiple characters to life, adding pace and humour throughout.
Behind the scenes, a creative team combining direction, choreography, puppetry and design aims to recreate the charm of the original book, while giving it a lively theatrical twist.
Jennifer Sutherland, Executive Producer at Freckle Productions, said the show continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.
“Zog has been a joy to share with families over the years,” she said. “Following the 15th anniversary of the book, we’re delighted to continue the celebrations with this tour.”
Since its publication in 2010, Zog has become a modern classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and inspiring a successful animated adaptation broadcast on Christmas Day. Its enduring appeal lies in its humour, warmth and message of perseverance—qualities that translate naturally to the stage.
With its mix of music, storytelling and visual spectacle, the production is expected to draw families from across the area when it lands in Swindon this July.
Tickets are expected to be in demand, as another chapter unfolds for a dragon who continues to win over new generations—one slightly bumpy flight at a time
