The Town Gardens Bowl is set to round off its 90th anniversary celebrations with two evenings of classic cinema under the stars.
South Swindon Parish Council is inviting residents to head to the historic outdoor venue for screenings of Disney’s Fantasia on Friday 4 September and The Wizard of Oz on Saturday 5 September.
Both films date from the 1930s, the same decade in which the Town Gardens Bowl first opened its doors in 1936, making them a fitting choice as the venue celebrates nine decades at the heart of South Swindon’s cultural life.
The programme gets under way on Friday with Fantasia, Disney’s landmark animated feature, before The Wizard of Oz takes to the screen the following evening.
Doors open at 7pm, with both films beginning at 8pm.
For audiences, the screenings offer the chance to enjoy two familiar films in rather less familiar surroundings, with the Town Gardens Bowl providing the backdrop for an evening of open-air entertainment.
The venue has hosted generations of Swindonians since opening in 1936, with music, theatre, film and community events all forming part of its long history.
Tickets range from £4.38 to £15, making the screenings an accessible option for families, couples and film fans looking for something a little different.
A spokesperson for South Swindon Parish Council said:
“The Town Gardens Bowl has been at the heart of South Swindon’s cultural life for 90 years, bringing generations together through live entertainment and community events. We’re delighted to round off this landmark anniversary with two timeless films from the very decade the Bowl first opened. We hope residents will join us for what promises to be two memorable evenings celebrating the history of this much-loved venue.”
The two screenings form the finale of a year-long programme celebrating the Bowl’s 90th anniversary, giving residents one final opportunity to mark the milestone at one of Swindon’s best-known outdoor venues.
