Film fans can swap the cinema seats for the great outdoors next month when two much-loved classics are screened under the stars at the Town Gardens Bowl.
South Swindon Parish Council is turning the Bowl into an open-air cinema for two evenings, giving audiences the chance to enjoy a pair of very different cinematic favourites in the surroundings of the Town Gardens.
First up is The Wizard of Oz on Friday 4 September, taking audiences on the familiar journey over the rainbow with Dorothy, Toto and friends.
The following evening, Saturday 5 September, sees Disney’s Fantasia take to the big screen, combining classical music with the remarkable animation that made the film a landmark in cinema history.
The screenings will provide a rather different cinema experience, with the big screen set against the backdrop of the Town Gardens and the evening sky overhead.
Doors open at 7pm, with both screenings starting at 8pm.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own chairs and picnics and settle down for the evening. There is one important rule, however – no alcohol or glass can be brought into the venue.
Whether it is a family evening out, a chance to catch up with friends or simply an excuse to see an old favourite on the big screen, the Town Gardens Bowl should provide a suitably atmospheric setting.

The open-air cinema forms part of the parish council’s programme of events aimed at bringing people into the Town Gardens and making use of one of South Swindon’s best-known green spaces.
For anyone who has never experienced a film beneath an open sky, this could be a good opportunity to give it a try – although unlike Dorothy, you won’t need to follow a yellow brick road to get there.
