From John Lewis to Sports Direct and even two from M&S.
That time of the year has come, yes we know it is only just Bonfire Night tonight but the retailers are always in a race to get your attention on their advert in the run up to Christmas with John Lewis being the most anticipated advert of the year. Surely your have already had at least one friend WhatsApp you the 2021 video released yesterday?
With so many adverts out this year we have taken time out to watch them all and rank them, let us know if you think we have been a little harsh (sorry TK Maxx) and why not let us know your favourite of them all in the comments below.
Right then, grab yourself a mince pie, and lets spend the next twenty minutes looking through Christmas. Feel free to save yourself two minutes my skipping this first one, we have already watched it on your behalf!
TK Maxx – Christmas to the Maxx
I guess they started off Christmassy however if you were thinking of buying me a present please let me tell you now a pair of metallic pointed ankle boots from TK Maxx is definitely not on my Christmas list!
M&S – Make the Season Anything but Ordinary
My issue with this advert from M&S is why? There is a second Christmas video, a long time coming I might add for the little superstar that surely was enough on its own to celebrate Christmas. Did you really need two adverts?
Boots – Bags of Joy
This one is just too long! The premise with the Mary Poppins style bag is you can buy anything in Boots, we get it but you could have down that in 60 seconds. In that time Joy could have unwrapped her present, fixed up the snow-woman and then spent a little longer with her Nan.
John Lewis – Unexpected Guest
The one most people wait for and compare to but this year I think is a little bit of a let down. A little boy finds an alien crashed in the woods, becomes friends steals a kiss and then she heads back home. More ET (without the kiss) than Christmas although she does eat her first ever mince pie I guess.
Very – It’s the very best excuse
At least they are fronting up to the fact that they are bringing Christmas to us a little early than some would like, even giving the trick or treaters mince pies! add in a cheesy little re-write of Holly Jolly Christmas and Very is jolly, Christmassy but will probably become annoying by the time you sit down for your turkey dinner in seven weeks time.
Disney – The Stepdad
I’m not really a fan of the long adverts but first one to be released for 2021 is not too bad although I an not sure how Nicole, the granddaughter from the 2020 advert has managed to grow so quickly and have a family of her own in just twelve months but I guess it must be the Disney Magic!
The lyrics to the song “Love Runs Deeper” by Gregory Porter featuring CHERISE, work perfectly with the story and anyone who has been in a step family position will relate.
M&S Food – Percy Pig comes to life!
Oh Baubles! M&S would have got away with just this one advert this year. Maybe instead of Percy running around the fridges (he did well to keep clear of the ham section) he could easily have gone and tried on a few clothes and stocked up for the ever increasing Percy Pig families Christmas day.
Stuffed Percy Pigs in the stockings this year everyone!!
Sports Direct – Go ALL Out This Christmas
Jack Grealish, Emma Raducanu, Jordan Pickford and Jessica Ennis-Hill are some of the big named sports stars in the 2021 Christmas ad for the sports retailer with the big mugs Sports Direct. I didn’t expect to find myself liking this one but I did. OK Mike Ashley has spent some of his Newcastle United sale money on fees for big stars but the actual storyline, running outside to play in the snow, grabbing some Quality Street on the way and having a snowball fight with your mates. Just like old times.
The only thing to have made this one better would have been to see Brian Harvey popping up in the white fluffy parka.
