Haines Watts Backs Swindon Film as Society Prepares for 80th Anniversary Celebrations

One of Swindon’s longest-established cultural organisations has received a boost ahead of its landmark anniversary, with Old Town accountancy firm Haines Watts Swindon announcing its support for Swindon Film’s 80th birthday celebrations.

The independent film society, which screens award-winning international cinema at the Arts Centre in Devizes Road, will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2027, making it one of the oldest film societies in the country.

Run entirely by a team of nine volunteers, Swindon Film is a not-for-profit organisation that presents 14 carefully selected films each season, with screenings taking place on Wednesday evenings between September and March.

The society hopes its anniversary celebrations will introduce even more local people to the world of independent and international cinema while highlighting the important role it has played in Swindon’s cultural life for eight decades.

Chair Robert Elrick said the committee works hard to create a programme that reflects stories and experiences from around the globe.

He said: “We strongly believe that most people in the world, wherever they are from, have an awful lot in common.

“The films we choose reflect the drama, tragedy and comedy that life holds for most of us, and reinforces that despite superficial differences we all have shared experiences that bind us together, rather than keep us apart.

“Swindon Film is a not-for-profit organisation, so to have some financial support from yet another supporter of Old Town activity will help us make our 80th year really special.”

The latest backing comes from Haines Watts Swindon, which is also based in Old Town and says supporting local organisations is an important part of its commitment to the community.

Director Emma Skinner said the decision to support the anniversary was an easy one.

She said: “We are huge supporters of Old Town generally, and Swindon Film is a gem.

“As a company with so many clients based nearby, as well as many who enjoy coming into Old Town to eat and drink and socialise here, it makes absolute sense to help celebrate something that really puts Swindon on the national film map.

“We’re really looking forward to another exciting season of Swindon Film, and are delighted to help make it the celebration it should be.”

The support will help Swindon Film promote its anniversary year and continue bringing acclaimed films from around the world to audiences in the town.

For an organisation that has quietly introduced generations of film lovers to world cinema, the milestone promises to be a fitting celebration of a cultural institution that has remained part of Swindon’s arts scene for almost 80 years.
