A group of student police officers have completed the Three Peaks Challenge in support of a young girl who needs a life changing operation to help her walk.
Six officers from Intake 31 battled high winds and heavy rain to climb Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis in 24 hours at the weekend.
To date, they’ve raised over £1,000 for four-year-old Malaya Rose, who has cerebral palsy. She needs to raise £42,500 for a selective dorsal rhizotomy operation that would enable her to take her first steps unaided. The operation is currently not available on the NHS.
Malaya is the daughter of PC Mark Douglas’ friend and lives in Portsmouth.
PC Douglas said: “Snowdon was our final climb and the drive there was brutal. When we arrived, we received a video of Malaya cheering us on which really motivated us.
“We were advised not to attempt the ascent due to 70mph winds, but we had made the promise and had come this far, so we pushed on. Two hours and 40 minutes later we summited Snowdon with the winds really pushing into us – the hard part had only just begun as we started our descent in the pitch dark. Head torches on and pouring rain, we managed to get back to the vehicles by 12.15am.
“It was one of the most physically and mentally challenging things we have ever done. It was an amazing experience with some great, selfless people and we made some awesome memories.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for their support, we really couldn’t have done it without you.”
