What places can stay open during the lockdown?

Although Boris Johnson didn’t say the words ‘lockdown’ the strict new measures implemented yesterday evening are clear, the UK is on lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

People have been advised they can only leave the house for a few specific reasons.

One of reasons Boris Johnson gave for why people may leave their homes was ‘shopping for basic necessities’.

Your Holiday Starts Now

The Prime Minister asked the public to go out to buy basic necessities such as food and medicine “as infrequently as possible” and to use delivery services where they could.

So, who is able to stay open to allow people to shop for basic necessities and who is to close?

All retail stores must close, except…

  • Supermarkets and other food shops, including corner shops and newsagents,
  • Health shops,
  • Pharmacies,
  • Petrol stations,
  • Bicycle shops,
  • Home, hardware shops and pet shops,
  • Launderettes and dry cleaners,
  • Garages,
  • Car rentals,
  • Post offices and banks.
  • Outdoor and indoor market stalls which offer essential retail, such as grocery and food.

Restaurants and cafes must shut, unless…

A food delivery or takeaway is offered.

Government advice says: “People can continue to enter premises to access takeaway services, including delivery drivers.

“People must not consumer food or drinks on site at restaurants, cafes or pubs whilst waiting for takeaway food.

“Those venues offering takeaway or delivery services must not include alcoholic beverages in this list if their license does not already permit.”

Hotel and holiday accommodation unless…

People can continue to live in hotels, hostels, BnBs, campsites and boarding houses whilst their primary residence is unavailable.

Where people live permanently in caravan parks or are staying in caravan parks whilst their primary residence is not available, they may continue to do so.

Key workers can continue to stay in hotels or similar where required.

Places of worship for services must shut unless for a funeral
