A life-changing recovery programme that helps women break free from the cycle of domestic abuse has returned to Swindon after several years’ absence.
The Freedom Programme, delivered locally by charity Society Without Abuse (SWA), is an 11-week rolling course that supports women whether they are still in an abusive relationship or have already left. This fills a crucial gap in provision, as most recovery schemes are only accessible after women have exited their relationships.
Emma Maclennan, Children and Families Manager for SWA and course facilitator, said:
“On average, a victim will experience 35 abusive incidents before they seek help. Victims also tend to reach out for support seven times before they feel able to leave. The tragic reality is that most women murdered by a partner are killed when they attempt to leave. Ensuring they have support while they’re still in the relationship can truly mean the difference between life and death.”
Created by a former probation officer, the Freedom Programme explores the tactics used by abusers, the impact on victims, and what a healthy relationship looks like. Participants receive a copy of Living with the Dominator, which mirrors the course sessions and provides an invaluable resource for reflection.
Women can join at any point, and a supportive group has already formed in Swindon. Emma added:
“It’s heartening to see women begin to process their experiences and support each other. Knowing you’re not alone can be a huge relief.”
One attendee shared how transformative the programme has been:
“Before Freedom, my life was broken and my heart hurt so much for my son. Each session was like a light bulb moment – realising the truth of our abuse. I’ve learnt to recognise abusive behaviours, I understand trauma bonding, and I feel so much more confident. I’d 100% recommend the programme to other women.”
The programme helps participants make sense of their experiences, recover emotionally, and build the confidence to form safe, happy relationships in the future.
