GP calls for pregnant women and young children to have lifesaving flu vaccine

The winter flu vaccination drive is now underway across Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, with pregnant women and young children among the first to be called forward for the free, lifesaving jab.

Flu is often mistaken for a heavy cold, but doctors warn it can cause serious complications, particularly for expectant mothers and children aged two and three. The vaccine, available free of charge, provides the best protection for families as colder months approach.

Dr Francis Campbell, GP Partner at Elm Tree Surgery in Swindon, urged families to book their vaccinations without delay:
“Getting protected sooner rather than later gives families the best possible chance of staying healthy throughout the winter and avoiding becoming seriously ill. The risk of flu to pregnant women is greater than most, as the virus affects not only mum, but also the baby. Having the flu vaccine is a simple, free and safe step that pregnant women can take to protect themselves and their baby.”

Flu vaccines can be given at any stage of pregnancy, and are available from GP practices, pharmacies, and midwife clinics.

The vaccine is also being offered to two- and three-year-olds, as well as children aged six months to 18 years with long-term health conditions. The nasal spray is quick, painless, and helps stop flu from spreading through households, nurseries and schools.

Georgia Barker, an NHS operational manager and mum to toddler Ziggy, said getting her son vaccinated was an easy decision:
“Getting Ziggy protected really is a no-brainer, as it supports him to stay healthy, and in turn keeps him happy. It also reduces the chance of me having to take time off work during the busiest time of year for the NHS – it’s definitely a win-win for our family.”

Parents can book appointments now via the NHS App, the national booking service at www.nhs.uk, or by calling 119.
