Approved Food: The online supermarket where shoppers save 70%

Every year in the UK over 7 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away, a lot of which has past its ‘best before’ date, but would still be perfectly good to eat.

Those concerned about this astronomical waste will be pleased to know that there is a solution. Approved Food.

Approved Food, an online retailer you may have seen on Dragon’s Den a number of years ago, sell groceries and household items for a lot less than the recommended retail prices because the products are near or past their ‘best before’ dates.

It’s Cheaper, But Is It Safe?
‘Best before’ dates are based on quality, not safety. So although you might risk the odd stale crisp, you won’t be risking your health.

Tests have been run on foods that are past their ‘Best Before’ date to ensure that there are no bacteria such as salmonella or streptococcus hiding in these foods. Scientists who have tested these foods have assured consumers that these foods are perfectly safe to eat.

This contrasts with ‘use by’ dates on foods that go off quickly like milk, meat, fish and salad bags. Eating food after its use by date could make you ill.

If a can of beans has a shelf life of two years, do you really think eating them one month after the ‘Best Before’ date is going to affect the taste or quality of the beans?
