A registered sex offender from Swindon has been jailed for three years after breaching a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Alex Smith, 33, of Queens Drive, Swindon, was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, 7 August, following his arrest for breaching the restrictions imposed on him by the courts.
Smith was originally convicted in 2006 of rape of a child under the age of 13. He has subsequently received several further convictions between 2006 and 2026 for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and notification requirements, as well as for possessing indecent images of children.
As a result of the previous offending, Smith is subject to a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and notification requirements.
Wiltshire Police said Smith was arrested on 7 July after he was found using a private web browser, in breach of the conditions imposed upon him.
He was remanded in custody following his arrest and subsequently appeared before Swindon Crown Court, where he was sentenced to three years in prison.
PC Katie Owers said the latest custodial sentence reflected the seriousness of Smith’s continued offending.
“Smith has continued to breach the orders imposed by the courts over a prolonged period of time, so I am pleased that the courts have on this occasion given a custodial sentence, reflecting the serious nature of the offending.”
The case highlights the restrictions and monitoring requirements placed on registered sex offenders through Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, which can impose specific prohibitions designed to protect the public and prevent further offending.
