Swindon man handed three-year football ban after assaulting police officer

A Swindon man has been banned from attending football matches for three years after assaulting a police officer ahead of a town centre fixture.

James Farmer, 29, of Walcot, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on 23 April, where he admitted assaulting an emergency worker and causing harassment, alarm or distress.

The charges relate to an incident on 28 February before a match between Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

The court heard that Farmer punched a police officer in the face prior to kick-off and went on to instigate disorder involving supporters from both sides. When he was arrested, officers found him carrying weighted gloves.

Alongside the three-year football banning order, he was also given a community order requiring 40 hours of unpaid work.

Wiltshire Police said the case highlights ongoing efforts to tackle matchday disorder.

PC Dan Hatt said: “This kind of behaviour has no place in football or our communities. The banning order reflects the seriousness of the offence.”

Inspector Louis McCoy added that police would continue to take a firm approach. “We are committed to dealing robustly with disorder at football matches and holding those responsible to account,” he said.

Officers confirmed that enquiries into the fixture are ongoing, with further arrests expected.

For most supporters, matchday remains about the game. For those who cross the line, the consequences are becoming increasingly clear.
