A Swindon business has been closed for a further three months after police raised fresh concerns about the sale of illicit tobacco and vapes.
The Lavy, in Commercial Road, Swindon, has been issued with another closure order following reports of illegal trading.
Wiltshire Police previously secured the closure of the business in March for three months – the maximum initial period allowed under the law. Officers had attended the premises and seized counterfeit goods, cigarettes and a significant amount of cash.
Since that closure order expired, police say they have continued to receive information about the sale of illicit goods from the premises.
Officers subsequently attended Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 21 August, where a further three-month closure order was granted.
PC Brown, from the Swindon Central South Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the sale of illegal tobacco and vapes could have wider consequences for the community.
“As we repeatedly say, the sale of illegal vapes and tobacco harms legitimate businesses and is coordinated by organised crime groups to create funds and launder money,” he said.
“Not only that but it is a health risk due to the lack of quality controls on the products being sold. You simply don’t know what is in them.”
Police say officers will continue to patrol the area and monitor the premises to ensure the closure order is being followed.
Members of the public who have concerns about suspected counterfeit goods are also being encouraged to report them to police.
PC Brown added: “We will continue to patrol the area and ensure the order is being adhered to.
“If you have any concerns regarding suspected counterfeit goods, please tell us so we can use all relevant powers to take the most appropriate action.”
The latest order means The Lavy will remain closed for a further three months.
