Stroke charity gets much needed financial boost

The McCarthy Stone Foundation has given Swindon Stroke Support a welcome boost with a £500 grant, which will help to fund fun social activities for stroke survivors and their carers.

Established in 1981, Swindon Stroke Support is a registered charity offering support to people affected by Stroke in the Swindon area. Proving that there is life after a stroke, the charity offers a weekly social support group for stroke survivors and their carers, which includes a varied programme of fun and inclusive social activities, local day trips and annual holidays. Run entirely by volunteers, the charity also provides wheelchair accessible transport for its users, enabling them to attend the weekly support groups and day trips.

The £500 grant from the McCarthy Stone Foundation has helped fund a group trip to the Cotswold Wildlife Park. The donation covered entrance fees and lunch for the group and enabled the charity to provide wheelchair accessible transport and mobility scooter hire, which made the day accessible to members of all physical abilities.Gerald Stephenson, Treasurer at Swindon Stroke Support, said: “The pandemic has meant that we haven’t been able to run our groups for nearly 15 months, so we’re looking forward to getting everyone back together again. We’re so grateful for this kind donation from the McCarthy Stone Foundation, which helped group members get together and enjoy a fun outing after we’ve all experienced a really tough year.”
