A Wiltshire man is preparing to cycle more than 700 miles across England in an emotional tribute to his late father while raising money for Prospect Hospice.
Matthew Harvey-Samuel will set off on an eight-day journey this August, following a route that links places which played an important role throughout the life of his father, James Harvey-Samuel.
The ride will take Matthew from Middlesbrough to Portsmouth, visiting former family homes, James’s school and university, the church where he married Matthew’s mother, the airfield where he learned to fly a glider and the place where he grew up.
Each stop has been chosen to reflect a different chapter of James’s life, creating a journey that is as much about remembrance as endurance.
A keen cyclist, James was a familiar sight on early morning rides through the Wiltshire countryside, a passion that inspired Matthew to honour his memory on two wheels.
With a military background, Matthew is well accustomed to demanding physical and mental challenges, but completing more than 700 miles in just eight days will be his toughest test yet.
The challenge will conclude on the first anniversary of his father’s death, making the final miles especially poignant.
Alongside remembering James, Matthew hopes the ride will raise vital funds for Prospect Hospice, whose care and support helped both his father and the wider family during his illness.
The charity provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people across Swindon, Marlborough and north-east Wiltshire, while also supporting families through some of life’s most difficult moments.
Matthew hopes the challenge will not only celebrate his father’s life but also help ensure other families can continue to benefit from the same compassionate care.
He is encouraging friends, family and members of the public to support the challenge by making a donation to Prospect Hospice, helping the charity continue its work supporting local people when they need it most.
For Matthew, the journey is about much more than covering the miles. It is a chance to retrace his father’s story, celebrate the memories they shared and give something back to the hospice that stood beside his family during their greatest time of need.
