While England’s hopes of bringing football home may have fallen short this summer, the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) in Swindon has chalked up a victory of its own by raising £1,340 for local homelessness charity Threshold.
The fundraiser saw the centre’s exhibitors embrace the spirit of the tournament in a World Cup sweepstake with a difference. More than 200 companies that regularly exhibit at the NSBRC were invited to make a charitable donation in return for being randomly allocated one of the competing nations. There were no cash prizes on offer – just the honour of backing the eventual champions and supporting a worthwhile local cause.
When Spain lifted the trophy, it was Ecological Building Systems, specialists in natural insulation materials, who claimed the bragging rights. Representatives from the company later presented a ceremonial cheque to Threshold during one of the NSBRC’s popular Renovation Workshop events.
Threshold has spent more than 50 years helping people across Swindon escape homelessness by providing safe accommodation, tailored support and a route towards independent living. Every donation helps make a tangible difference, whether that’s supplying essential toiletries for someone moving into supported accommodation, funding one-to-one support sessions or covering the cost of training and equipment that can help rebuild lives.
Harvey Fremlin, Managing Director of the NSBRC, said the fundraiser reflected the centre’s wider commitment to supporting the local community.
“We’re firm believers that people deserve better, more sustainable homes, and while we focus on helping our visitors create those every day, we’re humbled and extremely proud to play a small part in supporting Threshold to continue the great work they do to help people escape the cycle of homelessness.”
Rachel Harris, Threshold’s Fundraising and Communications Manager, praised both the NSBRC and its exhibitors for getting behind the initiative.

Their generous donations will help ensure people have a safe place to stay, the essentials they need to live in dignity and comfort, and support to move forward to independence. The NSBRC has shown longstanding support for our work, and we are hugely thankful for their commitment.”
The NSBRC, based at Lydiard Fields near Junction 16 of the M4, offers free admission six days a week and is home to hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest ideas, products and technology for anyone planning a self-build project or home improvement. Visitors can explore full-size building systems, energy efficiency solutions and expert advice under one roof.
Those wishing to support Threshold’s work can make donations directly through the charity, where even modest contributions can provide practical help for people facing homelessness across Swindon.
