Audrey Gallacher, Energy UK’s interim chief executive, said: “It is certainly not surprising to see that switching energy supplier is not a top priority for most people while they are getting to grips with lockdown life.

“However, as many of us might be looking at ways to save on our energy bills, as well as checking you are on the right deal for you, it is also important to consider energy efficiency measures, especially if you are working from home and might have extra time on your hands.

“Simple steps such as installing energy efficient light bulbs and turning off lights when you are not using them or minor DIY tasks such as draught proofing doors and windows can help you reduce the energy you use and save on your bill.”

If you are working from home, you are probably using more energy.  Energy efficiency can help you reduce your bill – and your carbon footprint so you are helping the planet as well as your pocket.

Saving energy at home:

  • Only boil the amount of water you need each time you put the kettle on.
  • Install energy efficient light bulbs and turn off lights if you aren’t using them.
  • Ensure your heating and hot water comes on at the time you need it and isn’t wasted.
  • Turning down your thermostat even a small amount can save significant amounts.
  • Your washing machine is one of the more expensive appliances at around 50p per one-hour wash. Wash clothes at a lower temperature to save energy and money.
  • Most electronic or electrical appliances can be switched off at the plug and don’t need to be on standby.
  • You may be able to use your time at home to do some DIY or make some minor adjustments like draught proof your doors and windows to ensure heat is not wasted.
