More areas facing Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions

More areas of England are set to face Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions with the announcement expected as early at this afternoon with Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick confirming that the government would not hesitate to further tighten festive restrictions in other areas of the country in an interview with Sky News today..

“We don’t have a timetable for that. The Government’s Covid operations committee is meeting later today to review further evidence,” he said.

“We keep this under review, we are constantly hearing from our scientific advisers about what we should do.”

Under Tier 4, retail shops must close and family gatherings and travel are further restricted. New measures could come in as early Boxing Day, it has been reported.

Areas that are rumoured to see their current tier restrictions include Birmingham, parts of Sussex, Rugby, Burnley, Lincoln, Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent.

All of these areas have a rolling 7 day case rate of over 300.
